6 Ways to Use Black Seed Oil for Hair and Scalp Care
Black seed oil, pressed from the seeds of Nigella sativa, has been valued for centuries in traditional medicine across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Historical texts such as Avicenna’s Canon of Medicine (1025 A.D.) describe its use for vitality, skin, and hair care. Archeologists even discovered black seed in the tomb of King Tutankhamun, suggesting its importance in ancient Egypt (Ahmad et al., 2013). Modern research has identified thymoquinone as the key bioactive compound in black seed oil. Thymoquinone has been studied in preclinical models for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects (Tavakkoli et al., 2017). These properties may help explain why black seed oil has long been applied to the scalp and skin—to help condition, moisturize, and maintain healthy-looking hair. 1. Apply the Oil Directly Massaging black seed oil into the scalp may help moisturize dry areas and support scalp comfort. Method: Warm a small amount of black seed oil between your palms. Massage into the scalp for 10–15 minutes. Leave on for 30 minutes before washing with a mild shampoo. 2. Apple Cider Vinegar and Black Seed Oil Apple cider vinegar is often used as a natural scalp rinse. Paired with black seed oil, it may help refresh the scalp and support balance. Method: Apply black seed oil directly to the scalp and leave for 20–30 minutes. Rinse the scalp with a diluted apple cider vinegar solution (1 part vinegar, 3 parts water). Follow with shampoo. 3. Olive Oil and Black Seed Oil Both olive oil and black seed oil are traditionally used for their moisturizing properties. Together, they make a nourishing blend. Method: Mix equal parts black seed oil and olive oil. Massage into the scalp and along the hair. Leave on for 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. 4. Henna and Black Seed Oil Henna has long been used in hair masks, while black seed oil adds conditioning support. Method: Mix henna powder with black seed oil to form a smooth paste. Apply to the scalp and hair as a mask. Leave on for 30 minutes, then rinse well with water. 5. Coconut Oil and Black Seed Oil Coconut oil is a common natural conditioner. Combined with black seed oil, it may help soften and hydrate hair. Method: Mix 1 tablespoon of black seed oil with 1 tablespoon of coconut oil. Apply from root to tip, covering the scalp. Wrap hair in a warm towel for 20 minutes. Rinse with shampoo. 6. Black Seed Oil and Lemon Juice Lemon juice has been traditionally used in scalp care. Following with black seed oil may help reduce dryness and condition the scalp. Method: Apply fresh lemon juice to the scalp for 10–15 minutes. Rinse with shampoo. Massage black seed oil into the scalp once the hair is dry. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Q: What makes black seed oil unique for hair care?A: Black seed oil is naturally rich in thymoquinone, a compound studied for antioxidant and soothing effects. Learn moreBlack Seed Oil and Your Lungs
Estimated reading time: 8 minutes For centuries, black seed oil has been called the “magic seed of Egypt.” Found in ancient tombs and praised in Middle Eastern texts, this dark, peppery oil has long been used to ease coughs, chest tightness, and breathing troubles. Now, science is catching up—showing how this traditional remedy might support your lungs, reduce inflammation, and help you breathe easier every day. Quick Look Early studies say black seed oil can make breathing easier for people with asthma and swollen airways [1][2]. The oil’s main active ingredient, thymoquinone, calms lung swelling and fights harmful germs [3][4]. A daily ½–1 teaspoon is the most common amount used in research on adults [5]. Black seed oil is a popular natural remedy for asthma relief and a simple lung health tip shared in many cultures. Table of Contents What Is Black Seed Oil? History and Traditional Uses What Makes the Oil Work? How It May Help Your Breathing Step‑By‑Step Guide to Using Black Seed Oil Lung‑Friendly Habits to Pair With the Oil Just for Fun - Black Seed Oil for Dogs Safety Tips and Possible Side Effects Questions & Answers Key Takeaways References 1. What Is Black Seed Oil? Black seed oil comes from tiny black seeds of the Nigella sativa plant. The plant grows in South and Southwest Asia, the Middle East, and parts of Europe. Farmers press the seeds to squeeze out a dark, slightly spicy oil. People have called these seeds “blessed seeds” because they have been used for many health problems for more than 2,000 years. 2. History and Traditional Uses Old writings from Egypt, Greece, and Persia mention Nigella sativa as a helper for stomach aches, runny noses, and chest tightness. Traditional healers often mixed the oil with honey or warm water for coughs. This long story of use sparks today’s growing interest in black seed oil for breathing problems. In modern times, the oil is used in food, skin creams, and do‑it‑yourself home remedies. Its strong taste and smell come from natural plant chemicals that also give health benefits. 3. What Makes the Oil Work? The star compound in black seed oil is thymoquinone. Lab and animal tests show thymoquinone can: Lower signals that cause swelling in body tissues [1]. Protect cells from harmful free radicals [4]. Slow down or stop certain germs and molds [3]. These actions may explain why some people feel better when they use the oil for asthma, bronchitis, or chest congestion. 4. How It May Help Your Breathing Calms Swelling in the Air Tubes When lungs are sore or puffy, breathing can feel like sucking air through a tiny straw. In one study, adults with partly‑controlled asthma took black seed oil every day for four weeks. Their swollen airways got calmer, and they blew air out more easily [1]. Helps People With Asthma Feel Better Another study with 80 adults looked at black seed oil for asthma symptoms. After a month, the people taking the oil had higher scores on an asthma test and needed fewer rescue puffs of their inhaler [2]. Additional small trials echo these findings [1]. Fights Bad Germs That Cause Lung Infections Sometimes colds or the flu let bacteria move into the lungs. Test‑tube work shows black seed oil can slow down Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae—two germs that can lead to bronchitis [3]. This does not replace antibiotics but may give an extra shield while you heal. Shields Lung Cells From Smoke and Pollution In animal tests, thymoquinone protected lung tissue against smoke damage. It raised the level of good enzymes that clean up toxins and lowered scarring in lung sacs [4]. For city dwellers breathing dusty or smoky air, this finding hints at help from black seed oil for lung detox. 5. Step‑By‑Step Guide to Using Black Seed Oil Below is a friendly plan you can follow at home. Start Small: Begin with ½ teaspoon (about 2.5 mL) once a day with food. The strong taste is easier to handle when mixed into yogurt or drizzled on toast. Listen to Your Body: After one week, if you feel okay, you may try 1 teaspoon (about 5 mL) daily. Do not rush higher. Stay Steady: Benefits often show after 2–4 weeks of steady use [2]. Pick a time—like breakfast—so you remember. Topical Chest Rub: For calming aroma, mix a few drops of black seed oil with a little olive or coconut oil. Rub gently on the chest before bed. The smell can open stuffy noses. Track Changes: Keep a small breathing journal. Write down any coughing, wheezing, or how many times you use an inhaler. Show this to your doctor. 6. Lung‑Friendly Habits to Pair With the Oil Black seed oil works best when teamed up with healthy daily actions. Practice Belly Breathing: Put one hand on your stomach. Breathe in slowly through your nose, feeling the abdomen rise. Breathe out slowly through tight lips. Do this for five minutes each day. Keep Air Clean: Stay away from second‑hand smoke, candles with heavy scents, and dusty rooms. Use a Humidifier: Dry air can irritate lungs. Aim for 40–50 % room humidity if you live in a dry place. Eat Anti‑Inflammatory Foods: Add ginger, garlic, berries, and leafy greens to your plate. These foods help the body fight swelling. Stay Active: Light exercise like walking or swimming makes lungs stronger. 7. Just for Fun - Black Seed Oil for Dogs Research on black seed oil in pets is still new, yet early studies on healthy adult dogs show promising results. A 2020 study found that adding a small daily amount of Nigella sativa oil improved antioxidant levels and boosted certain immune cells in dogs [6]. Holistic veterinarians and pet parents also use the oil to help itchy skin, seasonal allergies, and overall wellness. How much should my dog get? Dog Weight Daily Oil Amount 5–20 lb (2–9 kg) ⅛ teaspoon 21–50 lb (10–23 kg) ¼ teaspoon 51–90 lb (23–41 kg) ½ teaspoon over 90 lb (41 + kg) ¾ teaspoon Start at the low end of the range. Mix the oil into wet food so it is easy to swallow. Watch for loose stools; if this happens, cut the amount in half. Why might it help dogs? Shinier coat & calmer skin: The oil’s healthy fats and antioxidants can ease dry, itchy spots. Comfortable breathing: Like in people, the oil may calm airway swelling, making walks easier on dogs with mild allergies. Immune balance: Thymoquinone supports natural killer cells and healthy inflammation levels [6]. Always check with your veterinarian before starting any new supplement, especially if your dog is on medicine or is pregnant. 8. Safety Tips and Possible Side Effects Black seed oil is usually gentle on the body, but mild tummy upset or heartburn can happen if you take too much. Rarely, people may get a skin rash after rubbing the oil on their chest. Stop use if you feel dizzy, very sick, or notice hives. Pregnant or Nursing: Ask your doctor first, because strong herbs may not be safe for babies. Medical Conditions: If you take medicine for high blood sugar or blood pressure, let your doctor know before starting the oil. The oil can gently lower both sugar and pressure in some people. Stop Before Surgery: Thymoquinone may slow blood clotting. Pause the oil two weeks before any planned surgery. 9. Frequently Asked Questions Can black seed oil cure asthma? No. It may help lower symptoms, but inhalers and doctor visits are still needed [1][2]. When will I feel a change? Many users report easier breathing in 2–4 weeks [2]. Keep using it daily and note any progress. Is it OK to use long‑term? Studies as long as 12 weeks found the oil safe in adults at 1 teaspoon a day [5]. We do not have strong data beyond that. Does it taste bad? The flavor is spicy and earthy. Mixing with juice or food can mask the taste. Can I cook with it? Yes, but heat may lower some of its helpful parts. Use it raw or add after cooking. 10. Key Takeaways Black seed oil is an age‑old herbal remedy now supported by early modern research. Small clinical trials and lab studies show it may calm airway swelling, fight germs, and protect lung tissue [1][3][4]. A simple daily dose of ½–1 teaspoon, paired with lung‑friendly habits, offers an easy at‑home approach for breathing support [5]. Evidence is still emerging; always talk with a healthcare professional before starting any new remedy for you—or your pet. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Ready to Try Black Seed Oil? Learn moreThe Secret to Naturally Glowing Skin: Superfood Mushroom Extracts
There's a growing buzz in beauty—and it's coming from nature. While "superfoods" often make their way into smoothies and supplements, they're now making headlines in skincare, too. From Reishi to Shiitake, these powerful mushrooms are rich in nutrients that help support hydrated, radiant, and balanced-looking skin*. Used for centuries in traditional wellness practices, mushrooms are now backed by modern research showing how their natural antioxidants and bioactive compounds can help defend skin against environmental stressors*. If you've been curious about the mushroom skincare trend, here's everything you need to know—plus a simple DIY mask you can try at home. Why Mushrooms Are Trending in Skincare Unlike many fleeting beauty trends, mushroom skincare is rooted in science. Mushrooms contain polysaccharides, polyphenols, and vitamins that help nourish and protect the skin barrier*. These natural compounds support hydration, elasticity, and a healthy-looking glow—without synthetic additives or preservatives. Each variety has unique skin-supportive properties, making multi-mushroom blends ideal for overall skin balance. Let's look at some of the most popular types used in skincare and what makes them stand out. Top Functional Mushrooms for Healthy, Glowing Skin* 1. Reishi – The "Mushroom of Immortality" Known in ancient Chinese wellness traditions, Reishi mushrooms are rich in antioxidants and beta-glucans that help the skin maintain moisture and resilience. These compounds support the skin's natural ability to respond to dryness and environmental stressors* (Healthline, 2022). 2. Shiitake – For Brightness and Collagen Support* Shiitake mushrooms contain L-ergothioneine, an antioxidant amino acid that helps protect against visible signs of aging. They're also a natural source of kojic acid, which supports even-looking skin tone* (Healthline, 2023). 3. Chaga – Antioxidant Powerhouse* Chaga is one of the most antioxidant-dense mushrooms found in nature. It helps defend skin cells from free radicals*, which can result from pollution or UV exposure (Babitskaya et al., 2016). 4. Lion's Mane – For Smooth, Refreshed Skin* Lion's Mane mushrooms contain hericenones and erinacines—compounds studied for supporting cellular regeneration and helping soothe visible redness or dullness* (Healthline, 2021). 5. Cordyceps – Energizing and Clarifying* Cordyceps mushrooms are often called the "energy fungi." In skincare, they help promote a revitalized appearance by supporting oxygen flow to the skin surface, resulting in a smoother, more balanced look* (Healthline, 2023). 6. Maitake – Hydration and Balance* Maitake mushrooms are rich in beta-glucans that help retain moisture and keep skin feeling supple. They also provide essential B-vitamins, amino acids, and minerals that contribute to a healthy-looking complexion* (Healthline, 2023). The Science Behind Mushroom Extraction For skin and supplement use, mushrooms must go through an extraction process to make their active compounds bioavailable. Fresh mushrooms alone can't deliver the same results because their beneficial compounds are locked inside a tough cell wall made of chitin. The most effective and traditional method is Hot Water Extraction (HWE). This technique gently heats the mushrooms for hours, breaking down the chitin and releasing water-soluble compounds like beta-glucans and antioxidants. Afterward, the extract is dried into a concentrated powder that can be added to food, drinks, or skincare formulas. Why Hot Water Extraction Matters Releases key bioactive compounds from the whole fruiting body Increases antioxidant and beta-glucan concentration* Creates a highly absorbable and pure form of mushroom extract* What to Look for in a Quality Mushroom Skincare Product Not all mushroom powders are the same. Here's what to check before you buy: Whole Fruiting Bodies: The fruiting body contains the highest concentration of active compounds. Hot Water Extraction: Ensures maximum bioavailability and purity. USDA Certified Organic: Guarantees no synthetic pesticides or fillers. Grain-Free: Avoid products made with mycelium grain filler. DIY Mushroom Exfoliating Mask Want to try mushroom powder topically? Here's an easy way to make an exfoliating mask that supports smooth, refreshed skin.* Ingredients 1 teaspoon Organic Mushroom Powder Extract 1 tablespoon sea salt or finely ground coffee 1 tablespoon coconut or jojoba oil Instructions Mix ingredients into a soft paste. Everyone's skin is different, but with consistent use, many people notice improved texture and hydration over time.* Takeaway Functional mushrooms are more than a passing beauty trend—they're one of nature's most nutrient-rich ingredients. Whether added to your morning smoothie or your nightly skincare routine, these superfoods offer antioxidants, beta-glucans, and amino acids that help support smooth, balanced, and glowing skin.* *These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. That is why it is essential to take extra special care of the skin during the winter! Furthermore, skincare and makeup go hand in hand, and no one wants to apply makeup to their skin when it is dry and flaky, highlighting our imperfections. Today’s Pantry To Pretty product is with Organic Black Seed Oil or Nigella Sativa. This plant native to Asia has been around dating back to ancient Egypt times. The Queen of the Nile herself, Cleopatra, is said to have slathered it on herself! So, if you want to see the many Benefits of Black Seed Oil For The Skin, continue reading. Let’s take a gander at the nutrients found in black seed oil that contributes to beautiful skin. The Nutrients Found In Black Seed Cumin Oil That Are Great For The Skin Being a woman in her forties I am looking for products that have omega fatty acids, vitamin B & C, as well as some other antioxidants and black seed oil, has all of these! Yep, you read right. Until recently, I only looked used black seed oil for its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. It wasn’t until I discovered the many anti-aging benefits it had, thanks to an aesthetician friend of mine. She has great looking skin, and she shared with me that black seed oil has rich and powerful anti-oxidants like… Omega-3 fatty acids that help to improve the skins cellular structure. Vital Amino acids that are the building blocks of both peptides and proteins which have an essential role in skincare. Amino acids also maintain the skin's hydration and overall healthy appearance. Furthermore, it can help the skin to generate collagen and elastin! Skin Nourishing Vitamins: Black seed is an excellent source of vitamins B and C. As well as Zinc, Calcium, and Potassium who would have thought? All these combined are great at helping to promote the growth of healthy skin tissue, support the elasticity and tone of the skin, and can even help with minor acne flare-ups. Why Go DIY With Your Skincare Routine? The DIY approach to skincare has been something I have done forever! I got it from my mother and grandmother, who both have gorgeous skin. It's no secret that DIY can save you money, but when it comes to dry winter skin you want to stay away from products that have artificial fragrances and synthetics in them as these ingredients can cause your skin to become more irritated! While they may smell pretty, they are not pretty for the skin! Black Seed Oil Skincare Recipes Many have asked me how to take black seed oil? What is black seed oil good for? Well, black seed oil can be used in many ways, but today I am going to share with you my top 3 black seed oil skincare recipes. For A Glowing Complexion Mix 1 teaspoon of black seed oil with a carrier oil. My two favorites carrier oils are Coconut and Olive Oil. Rub the face with this mixture and leave on for one hour. Or I prefer to leave it on overnight. However, you want to be careful not to get it in your eyes. Also, leaving it on overnight may be too strong, so test it first before applying to your face. Wash off with gentle foaming facial cleanser. Never use a body soap to wash it off, it dries the skin! Zap A Zit This one is easy. All you need is a Q-tip Simply soak a clean Q-tip with black seed oil and dab it onto your pimples. For those extra troubled areas, I combine it with organic honey. A Facial Mask I love me a facial mask, and this one takes the cake as it is combined with Turmeric. Turmeric has been used in India for thousands of years as a spice and medicinal herb. The plant’s intense healing power primarily comes from Curcumin, its main active ingredient. Curcumin is packed with anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory firepower that promotes an incredible range of healing benefits. Combine that with the Black Seed oil, and you have the remedy for younger-looking radiant skin, so check out the video here. So, there you have it beauties, my first winter skincare Pantry to Pretty Bit. Make sure to stay tuned for my others that will talk about Organic Black Maca and Organic Mushroom powder. Until next time! Author- Barbie Ritzam
